The Maloti Drakensberg Route is an exciting and innovative initiative that spans the borders between South Africa and the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. The Route covers substantial areas of Lesotho, Eastern Cape, Eastern Free State and Ukhahlamba Drakensberg and seeks to increase the flow of visitors to these areas, opening up this scenic region and enriching the experiences of all who travel this way.

Focusing on the majestic mountains and the interesting people who inhabit them, the Maloti Drakensberg Route gives you and provides travellers with an unparalleled opportunity to experience a diversity of cultures including Basotho, English, Xhosa and Afrikaans.

The Maloti Drakensberg Route – a truly idyllic meander through awe inspiring natural beauty and picturesque mountains where you can visit friendly villages and towns, follow where dinosaurs prowled and left footprints, enjoy arts and crafts of the highest quality, fly fish, visit renowned rock art sites or just soak up the breathtaking scenery. For the more adventurous there are ski slopes, horse trails, 4 x 4 and hiking trails. Accommodation along the route includes graded hotels, luxury lodges, self-catering cottages and homely B&B’s.

Road Networks

Roads on the Maloti Drakensberg Route are generally good. Leaded fuel and diesel are available throughout the route. In Lesotho unleaded fuel is only available in Maseru. The speed limit in Lesotho is restricted to 50kmph on general roads and 80kmph on freeways. Click here for a general map of the area.

Banks and Credit Cards

Banking facilities (Monday to Friday: 09h00 – 15h30, Saturday: 08h30 – 11h00) and major credit cards are accepted in most towns in South Africa. Lesotho, banks are found in Maseru and most main towns (Monday to Friday: 08h30 – 15h30, Wednesday: 08h30 – 13h00, Saturday: 08h30 – 11h00). Credit cards are accepted at main hotels and in Maseru.

Communication

Modern telephone services link all the towns in the Eastern Free State, Eastern Cape and Ukhahlamba Drakensberg to the rest of South Africa and abroad, whilst cellular reception is excellent in most towns. The international code for South Africa is +27.

Telephone services are available in all main towns in Lesotho. Cellular reception is excellent in the lowlands. The international code is +266. (Please check your local directory for international outgoing code).
