ELLIOT, UGI, MACLEAR – At the foothills of the
Southern Drakensberg, the busy little towns of Elliot, Ugi
& Maclear offer wonderful activities against a backdrop of

skeleton site, abseiling down the spectacular Tsista Falls,

RHODES – Tucked away in the Easter
Cape Highlands on the border with Lesotho, Rhodes Village –
declared a Conservation Area in 1997 – exudes a timeless
charm and beauty. This Victorian-era village is surrounded
by pristine rivers – home to rainbow & brown trout, as well
as the small & largemouth yellow fish.
BARKLY EAST – Set in one of the most scenic sections
of the Eastern Cape Drakensberg Mountains this small town
has much to offer – excellent Trout angling in crystal clear
mountain streams. Species such as the Drakensberg Siskin,
Yellowbreasted Pipit, Orangebreasted Rockjumper, Ground
Woodpecker and Bearded Vulture make it a birders paradise
and an endless array of wildflower adds depth to the wealth
of features which fascinate visitors.
WARTRAIL/NEW ENGLAND – Nestled in the Southern Berg,
Wartrail/New England is a predominantly farming district,
farmed by descendants of the original settlers. Experience
an idyllic farm stay in magnificent mountain scenery. Snow
skiing, world famous bushman paintings, exceptional
fly-fishing, picnics next to waterfalls, romantic
star-gazing, adventurous hikes, delicious home cooked meals
and a fascinating history.
LADY GREY – Tucked away below the
awesome Witteberg mountain range, this Victorian-era village
is surrounded by magnificent mountains and pristine rivers. Founded in 1858 by the
Dutch Reformed community and named after the wife of Sir
George Grey, Governor of the Cape. The area is rich in
fossil beds, rock art and Anglo Boer War history with a
myriad of outdoor activities. Home to the Passion Play &
Lady Grey Arts Academy.
STERKSPRUIT – Hugging the Southern Drakensberg,
Sterkspruit & Herschel are beautifully scenic rural
districts consisting of many Xhosa tribal villages. Visit
the Mapetla Mohapi Memorial in Sterkspruit, that honours those
who participated in the Black Consciousness Movement during
the Apartheid years. It is also home to the Witteberg
Mission, birthplace of Olive Schreiner.
ALIWAL NORTH – Situated on the banks of the Orange
River near the site commemorating where the early Boer
families crossed this river during what is known as the
“great trek.” The town is well known for the hot thermal
springs, once among the top three visitors destinations in
South Africa. Today it boasts two industries, education and
tourism and is now the accepted gateway to the region’s
district municipality.
